General Manager, Truck Transportation


Responsibilities

Summary

Achieve the annual premium and profitability goals that are assigned to the Truck Transportation business unit of National Interstate. Coordinate and lead all aspects of product management and design, including underwriting, marketing, and operations functions. Direct internal staff members and manage some external relationships that include agents, producers, and other customers of the company.

  • Develop new products, product enhancements, services, methods of doing business, and methods to grow the business.
  • Manage direct expenses within the department’s expense budget.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the Truck products are properly managed, including presentation materials, legal documents, agreements, statements, strategies, etc.
  • Perform as a department manager responsible for directing the work of internal staff. This also includes participating in human resources functions of staff management, including issuing performance objectives, participating in corrective action/performance improvement plans, and making hiring, termination, and compensation decisions.
  • Manage external relationships through effectively acting as a representative of National Interstate within the insurance industry, ensuring that company and department external relationships are sustained to a satisfactory degree.
  • Act as the top product line manager for the Truck Transportation business unit, ensuring that all of the (annual) critical functions of the product are administered. This also involves communicating and working with several other internal departments on items such as coverages, retentions, technology, compliance, accounting, claims and risk control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of transportation/casualty experience, including 2-5 years of product profit and loss responsibility.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Graduate degree, CPCU designation, or other industry designations are preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to manage external relationships.
  • Ability to effectively lead meetings, present information, and respond to questions from management and customers. This also includes the ability to speak publicly before groups ranging in size from approximately 50-100 people.
